Narcissism and The Act of Taking Selfie on Instagram

Abstract
Due to developments in communication technologies, it has been raised new questions and resurrecting old questions about the interplay of interpersonal, mass, and peer communication emerged by media users. Yet new communication technologies demand a revised view of mass and interpersonal processes. New technologies blur the boundaries between interpersonal and mass communication events that communicators take on using new systemsEspecially, social network sites on which one’s associates can contribute content to one’s web-based profile has been changing these mass and interpersonal processes.Specifically, Instagram as one of the social network site is the focus area of the research and will be examined, with the issue of photo-sharing. Instagram is an online mobile photo and video sharing website which is launched in October 2010 and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them either publicly or privately.
In this regard, as a theorical framework, uses and gratification theory will be considered and with the light of this theory, the issue of ‘sharing selfie on Instagram’ will be analysed by looking at its psychological facts. Moreover, based on the most of psychological perspectives, it is seen as sharing selfies on Instagram is the reflection of narcissism and also, the research will highlight the relation between selfies shared on Instagram and narcissistic patterns with content analysis method. Between 1st and 10th of November, 2016 as a limited time, shared pictured with the hashtags of selfie will be analysed in the light of theories and the study has mostly used the internet to obtain the information about the issue of ‘Narcissism and Selfie.’
